Abu Dhabi Plaza, in Kazakh capital, Astana on site – but HKR has already built it in BIM
HKR’s role on Aldar’s Abu Dhabi Plaza has extended from lead design consultant to construction supervisor now the mixed-use development in Astana is on site.
Four years in the planning, the project, which features the tallest tower in the CIS at 80 floors has now begun its construction phase. Funded by the Abu Dhabi Government, the project in the capital of Kazakhstan features a 169 bedroom hotel, 38,000 sq m of retail and leisure, and substantial residential and commercial office space. HKR has simulated the entire construction programme in BIM, reducing uncertainty, improving safety and simulating and analysing potential impacts. It allowed the main contractor and key sub-contractors to input critical information, identifying opportunities for prefabrication or off-site assembly.
Speaking about the start on site, Jerry Ryan, principal of HKR said: “This is an enormous achievement for HKR.
"The project demonstrates how we design and deliver projects of international significance in challenging environments. We have 40 people in our Astana office, working seamlessly through our BIM capabilities with our other architects around the world to pool our experience and expertise. This kind of international work is precisely where I see the future of HKR and architecture generally.”
