HKR Architects leads debate on designing for the Old Kent Road Master Plan
26,000 real estate, city and political leaders, 5,400 investors and over 100 countries came together at this year’s MIPIM in Cannes from 13th to 16th March.
As part of the international property event, Geoff Brocklehurst joined the Old Kent Road panel session on Wednesday at the London stand to discuss the opportunities and huge changes set to take place in the area and importance of public realm, infrastructure and consultation for regeneration.
Geoff discussed the work the practice is doing at Nyes Wharf in Old Kent Road to provide local regeneration and growth through high quality flexible commercial space and mixed tenure homes and gave an overview of the plans which are in line with the objectives currently being set out by London Borough of Southwark and the GLA in the Old Kent Road Area Action Plan.
The planned Bakerloo line extension to Lewisham was also highlighted which will provide a major stimulus for improved connectivity within the opportunity area. From the lively thirty minute debate, the panel concluded that all good masterplans are tied together by good public realm but there is no quick solution.
Nyes Wharf is part of a larger composite 13 hectare site masterplan known as OKR14. The Old Kent Road is designated as an opportunity area in the London Plan because of its significant capacity for new development. Over the next twenty years, the opportunity area will be transformed, increasingly becoming a part of central London.
Public consultation on Southwark Council's Old Kent Road Area Action Plan, which sets the blueprint for the 20,000 new homes to be built over the next 20 years, closes on Wednesday 21 March.
HKR Architects currently has over 1000 new homes in planning and are involved in four major regeneration masterplans in London Boroughs which will deliver in the region of 5,000 new homes, including two significant developments which form part of the Old Kent Road Masterplan, being led by London Borough of Southwark.
