Shortlisted at the Sunday Times British Homes Awards and National Housing Design Awards
Schemes designed by HKR Architects for Pocket Living have been shortlisted for two awards this month, Sunday Times British Homes Awards and National Housing Design Awards. Juxon Street and Sail Street are shortlisted for Best Large Development at National Housing Design Awards and Innovative Living category at Sunday Times British Home Awards.
Juxon Street and Sail Street are two modular residential developments, providing 31 new affordable units on Sail Street, and 39 new affordable units on Juxon Street exclusively for first time buyers. The two modular blocks were designed by HKR Architects and built in a factory in Bedford using production line techniques before being transported to Lambeth. This resulted in a real reduction in on-site wastage, disturbance to the local community and allows for an accelerated programme.
Geoff Brocklehurst, Director of HKR Architects said, “We are extremely pleased to be recognised for our work at Juxon Street and Sail Street. From the outset of the project our architectural strategy had to respond to the dual nature of the surrounding context - the domestic scaled estate and the infrastructure scaled railway viaduct. At Juxon Street, we created a linear building with two faces; one of brick with windows overlooking the green space and one shrouded in a protective skin enclosing the walkways to the residential units.
“At Sail Street, we created elevations to the garden side of the scheme to enhance the visual amenity of neighbouring properties. We also enriched the green footprint of the site with careful design of patios, courtyards and green roofs and by specifying maintainable planting.”
Juxon Street provides 35 one bed flats (including one disabled accessible unit) and 4 two bed flats, while Sail Street features 30 one bedroom flats (including one disabled accessible unit) and 3 two bedroom flats.
